IATA (international air transport association) is founded in 1945 is the global representative of the international scheduled air transport industry. With over 260 members from almost 140 nations, IATA is the prime vehicle for inter – airline co-operation in promoting safe, reliable, secure and economical air services. IATA was involved in establishing a sound technical and legal framework for the operation of the world’s airlines. It organized the first worldwide traffic conference in 1947 which worked out agreement s related to fare construction rules for multi – sector trips, revenue allocation – prorating rules, baggage allowances, ticket and air waybill design and agency appointment procedures. IATA is also the co – coordinator of multilateral interline traffic agreements that allow nearly 300 airlines around the world to accept each other’s tickets and air waybills and thus their passenger and cargo traffic on a reciprocal basis. For airlines – IATA provide solution for the problem of single airline despite the differences in language, currencies, laws and rates of different airlines. For government – IATA frames working standard, co – ordination, international fares and rates including international airmail. For general public – IATA simplifies the traveling process, individual passenger can pay in single currency, arrange journey including many countries and services of different airlines. For third parties – IATA is the collective link between airline and travel agent. Passenger and cargo agents are able to make representation to the industry through IATA. Offices of IATA – IATA’s headquarter is in Montreal (Canada). Regional directors are based in Singapore, Geneva, Buenos Aires, and Beirut and Washington. Regional technical directors are based in Bangkok, Dakar, Geneva, London, Nairobi and Rio De Janeiro. IATA’s clearing house is in Geneva started in 1947. 1.
